hi, so im not sure exactly whats going on but heres the issue. I have the original puck and a board. I flashed the firmware and im able to make it work but the problem is i cant get it to get connected to both pucks at the same time. Initially it worked until i had an issue with my pc and reinstalled it and now what its doing is that for example ill forget all pucks and just put the controller on the OG puck and ill get a prompt to connect to it. After that ill do the l1+a and steam button to open the other slot and ill get a prompt to connect to a puck once i plug it into usb but the problem is that it makes both slots connect to the same puck. I also tried unplugging the og puck and connecting on the l1 slot for the second slot puck but everytime i pair it the remote connects both slots to the same puck instead of using one puck for each slot. I tried reinstalling the firmware on the board and repairing everything a bunch of times but i cant get each slot to connect to a seperate puck using both the board and the og puck. In the pictures itll show when i connect to the nrf board which is the one ending in BA. So that shows when i connect to it but as soon as i pair the og puck it shows the controller twice on the same puck

just to help. i was experiencing this.
it's a steam issue. everything is paired but steam has issue refreshing correctly.
solution.
in steam unpair everything.
turn off controller. disconnect all pucks.
restart steam.
connect one puck
start controller in desired slot and pair
disconnect puck. power off controller to switch slot.
restart steam.
connect other puck
pair puck to other slot.
restart steam and controller to be sure.
everything "should" be paired.
you might not have to restart steam as much. (i was doing a lot of fiddling)
but it helps make sure everything gets connected properly visually in steam

having this same issue as well. controller shows only the right slot in use for BOTH pucks. its as if both puck are using that slot. even after trying @mc711 's fix

Same thing here. No matter what I try, the valve puck or the openpuck always end up on the R1 slot. Cannot manage to pair anything to L1 slot
EDIT: fixed it by forcing a firmware update on the controller using latest stable Steam. I was on Steam beta channel before, and after I went back to stable, then forcing a firmware update on the controller, I was finally able to bind a puck to the A+L1 slot.
You access this under Controller -> Advanced Settings

I've tried updating the controller firmware, putting the openpuck in the "main" R1 slot, exiting Steam every time, and still no luck trying to get either the openpuck OR the official puck to connect to my controller in the L1 slot. Nothing seems to be working. I've also tried just copying the official puck identifiers to the openpuck through the web tool and it just gets stuck on 0%. At a complete loss on what to do here.
@Jefemy commented on GitHub (Oct 15, 2026):
There appears to be an issue on the latest firmware, released yesterday, where on USB/puck connection the slot automatically switches to slot 1. This makes it impossible to pair to the second slot as even in Steams own documentation it says to pair like this. Since it affects the real puck and Steam Machine hardware hopefully it can be resolved by them soon.
