One nice thing with the 8bitdo controllers is that they poweroff when are docked, and poweron again when removed from the dock.
Poweroff on dock is especially useful because it avoids accidentally triggering the controls when the gamepad isn't needed.
Poweron on undock would be nice but not really required.

I'm aware of the Steam+Y combo, but:

  • it's not very reliable
  • it's too much to ask to my kids anyway

How would this work with OpenPuck? The Steam Controller doesn't have an official dock, and I don't think it's an unusual use case to use the OEM puck as a charger with a battery bank or USB power brick while playing wirelessly to a different puck. This is a supported configuration on the Steam Machine.

I think that would require OpenPuck to have its own docking connector so it can see that the connected Steam Controller is actually docked (though even then it could be used for charging while gaming) so maybe make this configurable via WebUI.

On my setup the Steam controllers are docked on the Steam pucks (which are there only for charging) and the OpenPuck does the actual communication.
I would really like the controllers to poweroff on docking.

Could do power off on charging as an option. Don't think I can know if it's on the dock or not. I can see it being useful but I can also see it being annoying
